An arched bridge spans the canal and draws the eye through its opening into the narrow city beyond. Receding façades, steps, a small boat and mooring posts establish successive planes. Cream, ochre and brick-red walls frame blue-grey water, while sunlight catches the bridge, steps and façades. Thick horizontal strokes break reflections into flickering bands, placing the work between observed cityscape and a warm, theatrical evocation of Venice.

Artist and Venetian subjects

Paolo Rizzi was a 20th-century Italian painter whose subjects include Venetian canals, bridges, palaces, harbours and lanes. This work retains the Rizzi signature at lower right; its canal perspective, warm architecture, bright sky and tactile paint handling belong within his Venetian cityscape practice.
