Farmhouses at Sunset

CURATORIAL RECORD
Work appreciation
Mid-20th century | Oil on canvas | Acquired in Belgium | Léon Lommaert (1904–1978)
Low farmhouses and an expansive sky establish a broad horizontal rhythm, anchored by the tall, spare trees at right. A road leads naturally from the foreground into the village. Golden light emerges between the farm buildings and shifts through orange, pale pink and blue-grey, turning an ordinary rural view into a warm, quiet and poetic study of the close of day.
Artist and subjects
Léon Lommaert (1904–1978) was a 20th-century Belgian painter of rural landscapes, river views, farmhouses and figures. He often summarized buildings and terrain in free, direct strokes, using warm and cool layers to register changing weather and light. His strength lies less in minute detail than in overall atmosphere and spatial rhythm.
