Pond and Fields beneath a Clouded Sky

CURATORIAL RECORD
Work appreciation
Oil painting | Acquired in Belgium | Henri Joseph Pauwels (1903–1983)
An open lowland and an expansive sky form the painting’s principal axis. Clouds shift between warm and cool light, while a foreground track leads into the distance and works with the pond at right to guide the eye. Upright trees anchor the broad horizontal landscape, and reflections in the water repeat the sky’s light and colour to deepen the space. Pauwels handles nature in broad, rhythmic strokes; the work’s strength lies in his unified grasp of sky, land and air.
